By her 25th birthday, Lucy Wijnands had toured globally, completed a 16-week residency with the renowned Birdland Big Band, and became a regular performer at Manhattan’s Mezzrow and other jazz clubs. She won the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald competition and earned a degree in jazz studies from SUNY Purchase’s Conservatory of Music, graduating as an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar and President’s Award recipient.

Lucy Wijnands' father, Bram Wijnands, is a master of stride piano. From a young age, Lucy accompanied him to gigs, learning to swing while sitting on his knee. She quickly became a talented young singer, absorbing knowledge from Kansas City's jazz musicians.
